Who better to ask about where to find the best play spots and coolest toys than local families? Well that’s exactly what we set out to do with this post. We asked Chicago kids and their parents just where to get the good stuff, play with the merchandise, and simply have a great time all around. Thankfully these play-experts had a lot to say about which toy stores in Chicago they’d go to EVERY day if school didn’t get in the way.

1. Play

If you’re heading to the Farmer’s market in Logan Square this toy store merits a stop. (An hour or two at Play is a great way to motivate the kids eat all those fresh veggies your about to buy!) Besides Play’s wonderful selection of toys, the staff goes above and beyond to keep the little ones happy. Letting them play to their heart’s content (which means making a total mess of the joint) and the folks here don’t bat an eyelash at the total destruction your little angels have left behind. Plus, if you’re looking for an afternoon activity on Friday they have an open reading session, where gifted storytellers take the floor and the kids laugh, shout, and applause for encores!

2. Rotofugi Designer Toy Store & Gallery

Rotofugi Gallery is a winner among toy stores in Chicago. One experience watching the roto-matic (plastic mold toy maker) and your little one will be hooked!

If you need an original and rare toy for your child’s friend’s birthday party this is the spot to pick up a great gift! Plus, adults will also enjoy the blind boxes, urban vinyl, and the wonderful shows at the art gallery. The owners are also extremely helpful and will help you pick out that work of art or unique toy to take home or wrap up for a loved one.

3. Building Blocks Toy Store

Building Blocks has something for everyone. The owner is a real toy expert and creates a welcoming place for her local community to come hang out and just play away. The selection at Building Blocks is huge, from wooden to electronic stuff, from huggable to buildable. The Facebook fan page also has some fantastic give a ways if you give ‘em a like!

4. Main Street Candy & Toys

This charming spot in downtown Elmhurst is a shop that offers unique toys you wont find at the nearby Target or big chain stores. Plus, unlike other shops, they also have a great selection of candy that will please the sweet toothed-families out for an afternoon of play. The gift-wrapping is a nice feature if you’d like to purchase something for an upcoming birthday or holiday.

5. Fair Game

Fair Game is the beloved game store of local kids, teens, and adults! The staff is knowledgeable with welcoming smiles. Here you can linger for hours, and take out a few boxes of games to check out the goods before you decide on a purchase. If you like card games, board games, or a mix of digital toys you wont be disappointed at this family-run shop.
