This is our world illuminated by lights! By the end of 2011 we would have reached 7 billion people living on this planet. 7 billion is a big number! But when you look at the map its a little surprising because one realizes that we aren’t scattered! As you may have noticed if you have experienced home swap in these areas, continents like Africa and Australia are hardly inhabited…or wait, maybe they are but there isn’t the infrastructure for illumination. This could be the case with Africa. It was known to be the “dark continent” but that name is still very much relevant today. It’s interesting to see that we are mostly geographically concentrated in the United States, Europe, China, India and Japan.

This image comes from Nasa and is called a “satellite photo of earth at night”. These images are actually a map of the location of permanent lights on Earth. Researchers and economists actually use this map to study economic growth and environmental conditions of the regions.
