If you’re traveling to Canada, a great place to spend the day is Granville Island: a quaint area where you can enjoy the sights and smells of Vancouver in a new way. Filled with food, great views and entertainment for the whole family, a trip to the “island in the middle of the city” can be worthwhile.
Take the False Creek Ferry to Granville Island if you prefer not to walk across the bridge. It runs every 2-5 minutes from the West End and every 7-10 minutes from other routes. Though fares start at $11 for children and 15$ for adults, it will get you to the island quicker and is a fun experience for the kids. Plus, if you love the Ferry enough, they offer a variety of longer sightseeing trips year round.
Once you hop off the ferry, you will arrive on Granville Island, a reclaimed industrial site overflowing with food, shopping and wonderful views. The island has kept its heritage with the presence of old railroad tracks amongst cobblestone streets. Interactive street performers are frequently found along the streets filled with locals and tourists. Head over to the Public Market, where there is a special area for children of all ages to enjoy, known as the Kids Market.
Make sure to come hungry to the Public Market because the vast smells will be too tempting to pass up. With over one hundred food vendors, prepare for an abundance of fresh seafood from around the Island. Also, look forward to the fresh vegetables, fruits, cheeses and meats of different origins and varieties available to you. The vendors are extremely welcoming and helpful when it comes to new foodies. Some great choices are the Dockside Restaurant and The Keg Steakhouse + Bar. After you grab a bite, enjoy your fudge or ice cream (from none other than GI Gelato & Coffee and Olde World Fudge) on the many benches outside and look over the water to see beautiful Vancouver. If you thought it couldn’t get any better, think again. The island even has a Farmers Market that is open from June to October every Thursday. Warning: the seagulls are known to steal the food right from your hands!
Don’t forget about the kids (and the kids at heart)! They have their own Kids Market complete with over 25 shops, activities and services. There's a fun area known as Adventure Zone, a multi level playground with an arcade, known as Circuit Circus. Between the slides, ball pits, and jungle gym, they’ll be busy for hours. And once they’ve used all their energy running around, be sure to check out Ribbit’s Candy Corner where you can find specialty candy for $1 a bag! You can’t beat that.
To close out the day, end with a show at the Arts Club Theater to see a musical or comedy for the whole family to enjoy!
Don’t forget to explore Vancouver. A trip to this city is not complete without a visit to Granville Island. It can (and will!) be a fun experience for both you and your family. The delicious food options in the market are enough to make the visit!
